Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition Trailer Reveals Shin Akuma & Evil Ryu

Ladies and gentleman, prepare to be underwhelmed!  The just-released trailer for the Arcade Edition of Super Street Fighter 4 reveals a number of the arcade game’s unique features (in Japanese), and ends with an image of Shin Akuma and Evil Ryu, a couple of well-known boss characters from Street Fighter history.  The trailer shows no actual gameplay, nor is it clear at this time if these characters are indeed playable or “boss only” (although the smart money would be on these characters being unplayable, or at least unplayable in a two-player versus match, given the game’s widespread popularity in tournaments and the difficulty in making two hidden boss characters balanced for a tournament environment).

I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if there were more surprises in store even after the game is released later this month in Japanese arcades, so stay tuned, as always.

CONDOR DIVE!!!

Thanks to a certain benefactor giving me a capture card, I’ve had the ability to capture and record gameplay footage, which will naturally be used in future posts.  For my first attempt, however, I wanted to try something on the lighter side of things …

There are lots and lots of great videos for Super Street Fighter 4, showing tutorials, strategy, or high-level play.  This video features none of that …

CONDOR DIVE!!!

Stay tuned for more videos, serious or otherwise, in the coming weeks.

For Your Saturday Morning

Remember when the major networks used to put cartoons on Saturday morning?  No?  Well, maybe this will jog your memory:

More Marvel vs Capcom 3 Reveals: She-Hulk

She-Hulk smash!  In more MvC3 news today, it appears She-Hulk has been added to the roster on the Marvel side.  While how she’ll play remains largely a mystery, she certainly appears to have a style that is quite different from her better-known male counterpart:

There’s certain to be more characters on the way, and whenever they’re officially announced, The Idle will be here to let you know.

More Marvel vs Capcom 3 Reveals: Zero

My excitement for Marvel vs Capcom 3 grew significantly with today’s announcement via GameSpot that Megaman X and Tatsunoko vs Capcom star Zero would be joining the fray.  As the video below will demonstrate, his MvC3 counterpart appears to be very similar to how he played in TvC, which is a very good thing:

As always, I’ll keep an eye out for more official announcements (although it’ll be difficult for me to get as excited about any of the others as I am with this one).

An Open Letter to the Executives of ESPN

Dear ESPN:

It came to my attention (and everyone else’s) quite some time ago that you apparently have forgotten what actually qualifies as news.  In the interest of providing constructive feedback which you may use to improve the quality of your programming and web content, please allow me to provide you of a list of items to help clarify what qualifies as news and what does not.

News:

  • Verified reports of events that have actually taken place (e.g. trades, free agent signings, firings, suspensions)
  • Scores and results from various sporting events
  • Stories which involve an incident in which actual charges were filed against a person of interest

Not News:

  • Headlines including the words “sources”, “may”, “rumored”, “Brett”, “Favre”, “retire” in any combination
  • Predictions of things that might happen, but have not been confirmed, no matter how well informed the source (e.g. anything and everything that lead up to “The Decision”)
  • Allegations against a person of interest that have not lead to charges
  • Stories that tell us that “the league may review” a hot-button issue
  • Stories that being with “The Yankees Will Overpay For (Insert Player Name), or anything else that is painfully obvious.
  • Stories that involve a professional athlete going to play in another country
  • Any story involving where a free agent “may” sign
  • Anything that any athlete tweets, ever

Thank you very much for taking the time to read these criticisms.  I look forward to seeing their implementation in the near future.

Sincerely,

The Idle

Spoke too soon?

You know what I don’t like?  Being wrong.  But it happens, and when it does, there’s only one thing to do.  Admit it, and then deny that you said anything about it if anyone mentions it in the future.

What am I admitting to/future denying this time?  The rumor that had made its way around the internet (and this blog) that a so-called “mystery character” was shown in this picture involving Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition:

M

Turns out, it’s just good ol’ Chun-Li, as pointed out by the fine folks at Shoryuken, and evidenced by the following:

So much for that one.  For the record, I still think there’ll be more characters added to the game, but time will bear out whether such speculation is indeed fact.

Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition Has More Character(s) Coming

Super Street Fighter 4’s head honcho, Yoshinori Ono, is a busy guy.  Between the upcoming Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition and Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, Ono is spending almost as much time on remakes as Hollywood (bazing!).  Yet when he talks, people listen, largely in part because he is a notorious tease.  Take the latest post from his Twitter page, for example:

“SSF IV AE will get Gold master just a bit more! All I can do is wait for approval.AEwill running in Mid of Dec! ;)

Also included with the post is a lovely picture, featuring what appears to be a yet-to-be-announced new character:

M

It’s tough to tell who it might be, considering (s)he is being burned to a crisp by Dhalsim at the moment, but they appear to be wearing a thong.  Pulling from the canon of Street Fighter, that leaves us with one of two primary candidates:

  1. Elena

2.   Urien

urien

As much as I might desperately wish for the person getting toasted to be Elena, given my long standing desire to have her in the game, the smart money is on Urien, at least given what we can see in the image provided.  Don’t believe me?  Check out the video below, when Urien does a crouching block at the 0:14 mark:

Quite similar, don’t you think?

Fans of Elena (or any other Street Fighter character who’s not already on SSFIV’s considerable roster, for that matter) should take heart, however.  It seems highly probable that the Arcade Edition of the game has at least one other new character lurking in the shadows, and rest assured that The Idle has will keep his eyes and ears open as details continue to surface.

Video Game Song Medley (NSFW)

Greetings, all!  It’s an exciting time around here.  Not just because it’s Halloween, but also because I’ll be adding a lot more features to my video game-related posts from here on out (but more on that later).  In the meantime, however, enjoy this medley of beloved video game songs with (NSFW) lyrics:
